A Year in Toronto

It was my one year in Toronto anniversary on Saturday! It seems like it was just yesterday that I decided to make the most random big plunge and come to Toronto. After my birthday trip to New York, I had been contemplating coming to Toronto. I was having a hard time looking for jobs in Vancouver and decided the jobs I wanted to do were in Toronto. It took me less than 2 days after my birthday when I got back from New York to decide that I was coming to Toronto later in the month. I bought a one way ticket as I didn’t know if I was going to stay or if I was just visiting my friend and coming back in time for San Diego Comic Con. It sure ended up being one crazy summer! Getting a job for the summer in Toronto, finding a temporary place, all my trips I went on in the summer and deciding to permanently stay in Toronto after my work contract was over in August! I know this summer won’t be as crazy as it was last year but I am really glad I decided to make that move! Looking forward to see what else lies ahead for me here in Toronto!

March Blog Catch Up Updates

During this long winter, I have not been going out much and it affected me blogging more! My laziness also came into factor as well! Now that it is finally spring, I am planning on checking out more cool events, see more theatre and movies! Even though it may be spring right now, it still feels like winter here in Toronto! I hope it will feel more like Spring soon! Here is a brief recap of what I have done since February! Theatre, Films, Events and more!

THEATRE

I was volunteering for Rhubarb Festival last month! I got to see lots of great shows, support some of my friends’ works and I was glad to be part of the 35th anniversary! Having a major in Theatre, I know a lot of gay actors and have gone to school with people who are gay! Even some of my favorite celebrities are gay! So I am happy to continue to show my support and see what the gay community is like here in Toronto through the performances I got to see!

Soulpepper started last month their Salon Series! The cabaret setting was on the show’s Idiot’s Delight “The Grand Hotel” set with the same actors performing! I saw From Berlin To Broadway before I went to see Idiot’s Delight! It was great to see how the time period goes well together for both shows! I was so glad I got to go see this! FUN FACT: My first theatre performance I saw in Toronto was Soulpepper’s Angels In America in August! It will be returning in June! I just love to see shows there and take advantage of getting my tickets through StagePlay. Some videos below:

I also got to see Canadian Stages’ London Road! I love how Toronto theatre community makes me feel young with their under 30 discounts!

At work, we recently co presented with Aluna Theatre, Rutas Panamericanas Festival. It was a crazy 9 days of work but it was nice seeing lots of people attend the festival and the variety of international works being presented. I even got to see ONE show! Yea.. when you work in box office, you can’t always get to see everything! I also got to see our final show for our 31st season, In Spirit which was written and directed by our former artistic director, Tara Beagan! Right now, we have Acting Up Stage‘s Elegies: A Song Cycle in our theatre space, Aki Studio which I saw yesterday. It was really beautiful and touching show! You definitely can relate to more than one story when you have experienced lost and having to say ‘goodbye to someone’. Since Aki Studio is a black box theatre, it definitely helped make the show more intimate. Doing a musical performance definitely helps with this subject too! It runs till April 13!

FIlMS & FILM RELATED EVENTS

Sadly, there is not much films I want or have to see this year! Definitely The 86th Academy Awards was a must watch for me to see earlier this month! I did manage to see The Great Beauty last month which won Best Foreign Picture at the Oscars. Besides Veronica Mars being the most important thing I needed to see this month, I also recently watched The Grand Budapest Hotel and before that, The Wind Rises! All which I highly recommend!

In terms of film related events, I volunteered for 360 Screenings‘ Romeo and Juliet (Valentine’s Day) event and continue volunteering with WIFT-T‘s Career Advancement Program events!

OTHER EVENTS

On Sunday, I went to check out Canada Blooms with my friend, Kat. It is the largest Flower and Garden Festival in Canada which was held at Direct Energy Centre! It was interesting to see all the different floral designs, works and the gardens! Sometimes you would forget you are not outside! It is amazing how they managed to get some of these inside. It clearly took a lot of work!

As March comes to an end, I hope to start seeing even more theatre performances, watch more movies and attend more events and festivals! I will also hopefully start blogging more again on all my ‘outings’. Stay tune!

Upcoming: Veronica Mars Advanced Screening (March 13)

It was recently announced that Veronica Mars will indeed be released on March 14 in Canada. Thanks to Cineplex for helping to distribute to some of their theatres across Canada! The movie will both be screening in Vancouver and Toronto! Woohoo! After Veronica Mars was officially funded on Kickstarter, I was hoping to be able to still go to the LA premiere and after party but I knew I wasn’t sure anymore once I moved to Toronto in June. I kept dreading on when the premiere will be and if it will be possible with my current job. I have been trying so hard to make it work but trying to plan the trip to LA kept not being possible! So, I was still happy that the movie is indeed coming out in Canada the same day and I won’t need to travel to see the movie in theatres. Yes, I am guaranteed to see the movie regardless (digitally) but it is not the same! Now it has been announced that everyone will be able to see Veronica Mars on March 14! There will now be a digital and download options coming up which is totally cool! I cannot wait to see the movie in theatres with my friend on March 13! The day before it is officially released! Right now, I am enjoying doing my Veronica Mars marathon! Counting down the days!

Canadian fans, buy your ticket(s) to see the movie in theatres here for its limited theatre run (March 13-20).

2014 Golden Globes Awards (Predictions)

The Golden Globes airs tomorrow! I cannot wait to see who the winners end up being especially in the movie categories. I have now watched majority of the films nominated. So, I really want to see who ends up winning. I hope the ones I want to win will end up winning. Overall, the one that really matters is the Oscars. I do have a feeling that ones who win for Golden Globes may end up not being the same for the Oscars. Most of the TV shows nominated I have not watched. So, I am going to “guess” who ends up winning for that.

Best Motion Picture, Drama
12 Years a Slave
Captain Phillips
Gravity

Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave)
Idris Elba (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom)

Chiwetel deserves the win but I somehow don’t think GG wil choose him.

Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy
American Hustle
Her
Inside Llewyn Davis
Nebraska
The Wolf of Wall Street

This category is the tough for me to choose between musical or comedy. For me, it is Inside Llewyn Davis for “music”. Although Her should definitely win but I think they may end up giving it to American Hustle. So, that’s what I chose.

Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Enough Said)

Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture
Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine)
Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle)
Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave)
Julia Roberts (August: Osage County)
June Squibb (Nebraska)

I would love Lupita to win but I think the GG will chose Jen.

Best Screenplay – Motion Picture
Spike Jonze (Her)
Bob Nelson (Nebraska)
Jeff Pope and Steve Coogan (Philomena)
John Ridley (12 Years a Slave)
Eric Warren Singer and David O. Russell (American Hustle)

It’s between Her, 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle for me. Even though I chose Her, I have a feeling it may go to American Hustle.

Best Original Score – Motion Picture
Alex Ebert (All is Lost)
Alex Heffes (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom)
Steven Price (Gravity)
John Williams (The Book Thief)
Hans Zimmer (12 Years a Slave)

Best Original Song – Motion Picture
Atlas (Hunger Games Catching Fire)
Let It Go (Frozen)
Ordinary Love (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom)
Please Mr. Kennedy (Inside Llewyn Davis)

Josh Charles (The Good Wife)
Rob Lowe (Behind the Candelabra)
Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad)

People’s Choice Awards 2014 (Predictions)

To be honest. People’s Choice Awards to me are like Teen Choice Awards. Irrelevant. I really don’t care about them and who wins. However, it is award season and the award show airing right now. I was hoping to get this up sooner but after the long day I had just to get back to Toronto. I haven’t had a chance to work on this sooner. I decided to predict who the “people” chose to win for the Movie and TV categories. I am not updated on music. So, I am not going to bother with that category. Normally, when I watch award shows, I guess in advance who wins but I don’t have it written down. So, I never know if I was actually correct or not. Let’s see how many I end up being correct about. It really comes down to who has the bigger fan base with this award show. So, sometimes it is hard to tell who will end up winning.

Upcoming: Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival & Next Stage Theatre Festival

I will be back in Toronto tomorrow and there are two festivals I will be attending once I am back. Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival started on Friday and ends this Sunday (January 3-January 12). Next Stage Theatre Festival kicked off today and ends on January 19. I will be volunteering for NSTF and hope to see as many shows as I possibly can! I still have some stamps from volunteering at Toronto Fringe Festival which I can use for the NSTF shows. I am looking forward to Praxis Theatre’s Rifles and Release The Stars: the ballad of randy and evi quaid directed by Jack Grinhaus. For CTT, I have only two days I could possibly see movies. I am planning on seeing either or both Watermark and Gabrielle. I feel like the weather will be the deciding factor of how much I end up seeing at CTT.

Schedule -> Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival (January 3-12) at TIFF Bell Lightbox
Schedule – Next Stage Theatre Festival (January 8-19) at Factory Theatre

Make sure to follow me on twitter @jasjwang to see what I end up seeing! I will try to do a recap after.

Back In Vancouver – WEEK #2

I haven’t had much time to do more blogging as I have been busy before and after Christmas. As 2014 slowly approaches, I find myself having more time to update my sites and figured it would be a good time to also recap on other stuff I did last week.

On Monday, I met up with my friend Ida again and we went to UBC to visit our former co workers at Irving K Barber Library. It was nice catching up with some of them especially the ones who I didn’t get to see the last time I stopped by earlier this year. I also stopped by the Chan Centre which was where I worked before I had moved to Toronto and caught up with my manager, Trevor. He was from Toronto. So, we talked about Toronto and what has been going on at Chan Centre since I left. Also, what I have been up to too!

As I previously mentioned my main Christmas dinners were on Boxing Day and on Saturday. It was nice to catch up with family. For Christmas, I got two presents from my aunt and Grandma. Yes I received other “gifts”, they were money. I was very excited about my presents from my aunt and Grandma as they were winter sweaters. My aunt also got me a scarf and nail polish! Basically, I got everything I needed and love! I managed to go to Metrotown twice while catching up with my friends (Friday and Sunday). There is now a Disney store and Target there! I honestly can’t remember if I knew there was a Victoria Secret there or if that was new too. I normally go to Silvercity side more than Metrotown. I finished off my Boxing Day week shopping by getting rubber boots, duffel bag and pantyhose/tights! Everything I need to bring back with me to Toronto. In terms of theatre and film, I watched The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty. I could see why it didn’t get good ratings as it was predictable but I really enjoyed it and it made my travel bug come back! I saw Jack and The Beanstalk: An East Van Panto at York Theatre which I loved! It was everything I thought it would be. It made me proud to have grown up in East Van! I saw It’s Snowing On Saltspring at Granville Island Stage on Saturday. It was great as well and funny! I really loved the set change during intermission. It started to look more like Christmas with all the presents, stuffed animals etc. I felt like I was a little kid again. As for food, I have been cooking and baking a lot. I ate at more restaurants: Banana Leaf, Cattle Cafe, Cupcakes, Kawawa Japanese restaurant and went back to Soho restaurant for bubble tea. Otherwise, it was a fulfilling week! You can find all the food pics over on my instagram @jasjwang

Tomorrow, I will be getting ready for the New Years Eve Great Gatsby party I am going to! I will have a couple of more blog posts up before 2014!
